Dobbiamo continuare a lottare. Ma è sconvolgente quanto poco siamo riusciti a cambiare davvero.

Emiliano:

All’epoca ero ingenuo.

Emiliano:

Ho prodotto un film, A King Like Me, sugli afroamericani a New Orleans, diretto da Matthew Henderson.

Io continuerò a farlo.

Emiliano:
Grazie.

Fisher:
Grazie a te.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

On March 31, at the Cinema Centrale in Lucca, the Lucca Film Festival welcomed an exceptional guest: Academy Award winner Fisher Stevens, best known for his role in Short Circuit, who attended the event to speak about and reflect on his landmark documentary The Cove.

During the evening, accompanied by LFF director Cristina Puccinelli, Stevens emphasized how empathy is the common thread running through the entire film, which—contrary to popular belief—does not contain explicit scenes of violence against dolphins, except for a brief moment toward the end.

Looking back on his career, Stevens highlighted the role of his parents, who encouraged him to use his work as a way to “change the world.”
Beyond acting, his work has also extended into theater and documentary filmmaking, including The Cove, which was made in part thanks to a producer friend who urged him to document the cruelty inflicted on dolphins.

The documentary later received support and encouragement from several artists, most notably David Bowie, who contributed the film’s closing song.

Stevens also explained that, following the film’s release and widespread distribution, the number of dolphin killings has actually decreased—showing that even small actions can help slow down or stop injustices in the world, much like in the case of war.

At the end of the event, we at Carta n°0 had the opportunity to meet him and ask a few questions for the “ACD” project.

Emiliano: The ‘invisible deaths’ portrayed in The Cove – La baia dove muoiono i delfini could be seen, metaphorically, as reflecting the effects of social stigma. How much does it matter when each of us chooses not to see?

Fisher: We are showing the deaths because people don’t understand what happens. There’s so much going on in the world now. Remember, we made this movie before we had iPhones, or right when iPhones started, and so it was so interesting how we had to expose what was going on with these dolphins and expose the murder or massacre of these dolphins. What’s so crazy is that when I watch the movie, I feel like we’re seeing everything happen before our eyes. I’m from America, so we see two people get shot in cold blood in Minneapolis. We get upset, but we still have ICE in cities. We still have the President of the United States able to do what he’s doing. Yet I think if this happened in 2009 and we saw two people shot in cold blood, or we saw dolphins slaughtered like this, something could have been done about it. Many dolphins have been spared now that we’ve shown what happened in Taiji, thanks to the outrage and protests. The Japanese people understand that if you eat those dolphins, you’re contaminating your children, so they stop feeding them, which is good.

However, what’s so shocking today in 2026 is that we still know that we’re destroying the environment, that we’re watching my country lose its democracy, and we’re still allowing it to happen. We’re protesting, but it’s still going on. That’s what’s so sad and crazy about watching The Cove, which I haven’t seen in 15 years until today. I haven’t watched it in so long. We have to keep showing people what’s unjust and what’s wrong. We have to keep fighting, but it’s so crazy that we haven’t been able to change more.

Emiliano: Corto Circuito, nearly forty years on, can be seen not only as an early story about artificial intelligence, but also as a metaphor: someone initially invisible or reduced to a mere executor, who—through knowledge and relationships—develops awareness and becomes a self. Is this a reading that, in your view, is still relevant today?

Fisher: First of all, I would say that about [foreign language]: I would never play that role today, because Indian actors would play Indian roles now. I was naive then. I would never do it now. However, it’s important that we have representation of all people in movies. I would say that the world has changed in a very good direction, unlike what I said before. Now, I think we’re progressing and moving in a positive way, so I’m happy about that. I did that movie a long time ago, and I’m so glad we’ve made progress in terms of underrepresented people being represented. Unfortunately, I shouldn’t have played the underrepresented being a white guy, but I did. It was 40 years ago. There’s some good progress, but now, I would never play that role.

Emiliano: What contribution do you think your films have made to overcoming prejudice? And what themes do you feel cinema can explore today regarding social invisibility?

Fisher: I think you make a lot of these films to inspire change and to make a difference. Most of my films have been about the environment. I produced a film, A King Like Me, about African Americans in New Orleans, directed by Matthew Henderson. I produced it, showing again, people who are not normally represented in films. In this case, it was the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club in New Orleans, a powerful black men’s club. However, I had a very difficult time distributing the film, getting it sold and seen. Thankfully, it’s on Netflix now in America and England. Another film I made was called We Are Guardians. It was about indigenous people trying to protect the Amazon. Again, it was very difficult to get distribution and to get it seen, so it’s been difficult. If I made The Cove in 2009, I think those films would have had more visibility back then. Now there are many more films, but far fewer places to show them, and that saddens me. However, those films are showing people who don’t normally get a voice. They are showing a side of the world, again, as The Cove, where you don’t discover dolphin slaughters.

You get to see a world you never normally see. I’m not going to ever stop showing the unrepresented. They’re not invisible, but they are not often represented in films, so I’m going to continue. I just have to make other films to pay my rent and pay for my kids’ school, because these films don’t cover tuition or my kids’ food.

Emiliano: Thank you.

Fisher: Thank you, too.

[14
12,28,33,42,41,29,40,39,23,38
post-200","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-acd-arte-cultura-e-disabilita-contro-lo-stigma","tag-acd","tag-arte","tag-cinema","tag-circuito","tag-corto","tag-cultura","tag-delfini","tag-fisher","tag-lff","tag-steven
["GET
