Emiliano Tognetti: Grazie!

Tracy Chevalier: Grazie a voi!

English version:

Emiliano Tognetti: We are at the Salone del Libro in Turin, at the International Books Festival. We are with Tracy Chevalier, author of La maestra del vetro and the much more famous Girl with a Pearl Earring, Italian title La ragazza con l’orecchino di perla, published in Italy by Neri Pozza. Tracy, let’s talk about your most famous book, Girl with a Pearl Earring. How did the idea for this book first come to you? Did you start with the image and the story behind the painting? If so, what was the first image or idea that came to mind?

Tracy Chevalier: I’ve always loved that painting. I had a poster of it in my bedroom. For years, I just looked at it. And then one day I asked myself what the painter had done to her to make her look like that—with that ambiguous expression. That’s when I thought maybe I could write that story and figure out what her relationship with the painter was. That was the seed of the book.

Emiliano Tognetti: What was it like to recreate 17th-century Netherlands? How did you go about building the plot and characters?

Tracy Chevalier: First I looked at lots of paintings—Vermeer’s, and many others from the Dutch Golden Age. I read a lot. I went to Delft, where the story is set, explored the city, and slowly the story started growing in my mind.

Emiliano Tognetti: Griet’s point of view, as she gradually discovers the world of art, is one of the most compelling parts of the novel. Does her perspective reflect your own relationship with art in any way? How much of yourself is in her?

Tracy Chevalier: I think there’s a tiny bit of me in all my main characters, including Griet. Her exploration of light, color, and paint was also partly my own exploration.

Emiliano Tognetti: Did you ever think of the novel as a way of reading the painting, offering readers a new perspective on Vermeer’s work?

Tracy Chevalier: Yes. I’ve always thought that if people read the book, they might look at the painting differently—and at other paintings too—seeking out the story within the image. That opens up a whole new world of art.

Emiliano Tognetti: In your view, what elements or messages in Girl with a Pearl Earring still resonate with today’s readers when they look at the painting?

Tracy Chevalier: I think it’s a very powerful painting, because even after writing a whole book about it, it’s still not clear what she’s thinking as she looks at us. It’s like a song that ends on the second-to-last chord instead of resolving, and I think that’s what makes people come back to it again and again.

Emiliano Tognetti: What kind of relationship do you think the book has with the film adaptation? Do you feel it stayed true to your vision?

Tracy Chevalier: I think the film is like a sister to the book. It’s not exactly the same, but they’re closely related. I was very happy with the film.

Emiliano Tognetti: Twenty-five years after its publication, what message do you think the novel still carries for readers today?

Tracy Chevalier: I think it encourages people to look at light and dark and color—and to understand that there are stories behind moments captured in paintings. All you have to do is think about them to uncover them.

Emiliano Tognetti: If you’d like, you can answer one question about your new book, La maestra del vetro. What is the idea behind the book?

Tracy Chevalier: I wanted to write a novel set in Venice, and I was looking for a new angle, since so many books have already been written about Venice. Someone told me that the glass beads in Murano were made by women—and I love writing about women. So I thought I’d bring it all together and tell a long history of Venice, seen through the eyes of a woman who makes glass beads.

Emiliano Tognetti: Is there a relationship between La maestra del vetro and Girl with a Pearl Earring?

Tracy Chevalier: I think there’s an importance in looking, in making, in color, and in history—and how that all affects the way we see ourselves today.

Emiliano Tognetti: Last question. What is the message in La maestra del vetro?

Tracy Chevalier: I think it’s to be aware of our past, to look at Venice with new eyes—not just as a city preserved in time, but as one with a long and fascinating history.

Emiliano Tognetti: Thank you!Tracy Chevalier: Thank you, too!

[14

post-132","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-acd-arte-cultura-e-disabilita-contro-lo-stigma
["GET
